At Impact Academy, we see every school day as an opportunity to build community with our students and create rich learning experiences. Here’s what a Day in the Life of an Impact student looks like:
Welcome to Impact Academy
7:40-8:10 AM
I get to school and go to the court where I meet up with my friends. Sometimes we play basketball and sometimes we just talk about Instagram or Snapchat. We can also go visit Mr. Williams, our English teacher, in his room to hang out there before school starts. At IAMG, our administrators walk around in the morning to greet us, and every teacher welcomes us at the door when class starts.
8:10-9:05 AM
School is starting! I head to math class and get our Illustrative Math papers and a pencil to start the day. We do the Do-Now first and cover what we’re learning for the day. The best thing about math this year was multiplying and dividing decimals. That’s one of my strengths. In math, when you participate in an activity, you win Kickboard Points. On a certain day we get free time for 30 minutes to spend our Kickboard Points on prizes like food, shirts, or a Positive Postcard home.
9:05-9:35 AM
I can pick up breakfast from our cafeteria if I want it, and then I go to advisory with Ms. Kelly and Ms. Dani where I talk to my friends. We get our circle set up, put our values cards in the middle, and read our circle guidelines. At IAMG we spend time in advisory in our Restorative Justice circles, which helps us build community and get to know more people. My favorite thing about advisory are the people. We are nice and funny and laugh a lot.
9:40-11:25 AM
This is when I have my Humanities Block or STEM Block every other day. In STEM we go to our seats, finish our 2-minute Hustle, and then complete our 10 minute Do-Now reflecting on what we learned the day before or what we can improve on in class today. Then, we Build-On where we share what we wrote to the whole class. On this day, we went right into our slides and Ms. Pittman told us to be fair with our partners and split the work evenly to find images about different ecosystems.
Lunch Time!
11:25AM-12:00PM
It’s Lunch Time! On a typical day me and my friends go to the basketball court, or throw around the football for 5 minutes. We’ll get a game going and some people eating lunch will eat and watch. Anyone can join after you finish eating. You can do anything you want! Except use your phones. The cafeteria is also open for anyone who wants school lunch. We say our goodbyes and head to class where we get in line and get ready for English.
12:00-12:50 PM
During English Mr. Williams lets us talk during the 2-minute hustle while we settle in. Then he explains our lesson for the day. After the lesson, we get time to get our work done at Voice Level 1. I get to sit with my friends while I work. Right now we’re working on our project about the book The Giver. I got to pick project #10, which was writing a positive letter to the author giving feedback on her book.
12:55-1:20 PM
We go back to our advisories and then our advisors tell us to settle down and we either use our Chromebooks to listen to books, or read graphic novels. We can also read regular books. This happens every day for 15 minutes. Our school is reading at the same time. It’s a time to be calm and relax.
BREAK!
1:20-1:30PM
I meet up with my friends and sometimes we talk or sometimes we go to the basketball court to shoot a couple of hoops. It’s a short break so we go right to Physical Activities.
1:30-2:20 PM
During Physical Activities, we go to our spots at Voice Level 1 for the 2-minute hustle. There are usually 2 activities we do in PE. One day we did a snake game where we eat cotton balls, and the second activity was a cone game where you have to select the right color under the cones. Some days we’ll do Fitness 22 which is pushups and sit-ups. On Mondays we do Mile Mondays and make sure you finish the mile under 17 minutes! Right now my mile time is 12 minutes, but I’m getting faster.
2:25-3:20 PM
6th Period is our last period of the day. For me it’s Daily Flex, which is when we get time to think about our lives and futures and we reflect on what our goals are. On Tuesdays, Mr. Tristan will have us do our See Readers, which is a program to get better and faster at reading. Then we’ll reflect on our SMART Goals by writing two paragraphs. One of my SMART goals was to make the basketball team by December. I made the team and got my SMART goal done!
3:20-4:20 PM
After school my friends will get a game on at the courts. We’ll pick our teams and play a short game. If we need help, we’ll then go to Office Hours to get help in a subject if we need it. Or, we can visit our old teachers to say what’s up. Some students also go to a club like Cooking Club, Dance Club, Choir, or Game Club. There’s also benches in the courtyard where we can sit and make our plans on how to get home. My friend always asks me for a ride home. And that’s just a regular day at Impact Academy Middle Grades!
